Building a social networking community website with wordpress Mu

Jotted by brajesh on December 30, 2008

Well, there are times when you wish to build a social networking website with wordpress Mu.

The best solution available is buddypress(a set of plugins developed by Andy Peatling).

BuddyPress

Here is what they say about it on buddypress’s website

BuddyPress will transform an installation of WordPress MU into a social network platform.BuddyPress is a set of WordPress MU specific plugins, each plugin adding a distinct new feature. BuddyPress contains all the features you’d expect from WordPress but aims to let members socially interact

In my view, they are quiet right.I used buddypress on one of the  wordpress Mu based website of my client and it worked  very well.It is full of almost all features you need for a social networking website.

The most important thing is buddypress was acquired by Automattic(The parent company of wordpress),and is under active development.

Download the buddypress from its official website buddypress.org

Here is an excellent tutorial by Brad Williams on Installing buddypress.Chek out his article for installing and configuring buddypress with wordpress Mu.

I wished to share here something,I built a plugin to allow users to enter their own password, while registering for an account on wordpress Mu+buddypress integrated websites.

I will be sharing the plugin,as soon as I can write the details here.

Happy Social networking with buddypress and wordpress Mu.

Why Thinking In Wordpress

Jotted by brajesh on December 27, 2008

Well, this is my first post on ThinkingInWordpress.com, so it has some special meaning.

The first question, which arises with the name ThinkingInWordpress, why thinking in wordpress.

Well,As I hope you may be familiar with wordpress, wordpress is my beloved blogging platform. It not only gives me the power to express myself easily on web but also is a reason for my bread and butter(yeh!,our company’s main source of income is wordpress based development of websites, blogs, themes, plugins and more). So wordpress is my life saver and I love it more than anything. In the last 2 years I have been playing with wordpress and It has become one of the most favorite CMS(did I say CMS?),of my choice. It has unlimited capabilities to be utilized as an easy to use CMS.Instead of wasting time in customizing other cumbersome cmses available,I love to work with wordpress, for our site, for our clients website. We strongly recommend wordpress,as it is pretty easy and the main goal of wordpress is end user not developer(as in case of some of the most powerful CMSes).

Well, how can we use wordpress as an efficient CMs will be my topic for some other day,for today,It is just enough to say,I love(or we all love) wordpress because of its simplicity, extensibility and native approach. So here on Thinking in wordpress ,I will share my thoughts on wordpress(and you are most welcome to share yours,I will love to hear from you,how you like wordpress and why).

I hope to share my extensive knowledge of wordpress here and hope to give back to the community which has given me(or Us) so much things.

Thanks again for stopping by.

Hope to see you in discussions soon.

Wordpress 2.7 and Custom page template Issue

Jotted by brajesh on December 16, 2008

It has been around a week since wordpress 2.7 was released. As I mentioned In my previous posts,It has a great admin interface but full with quirks. There are many things that needs attentions, but here I will discuss just one.

If you are using a custom theme(not the default theme which ships with wordpress),and your theme has some custom Page templates, there are possibilities, you might have already noticed this unwanted behavior.

Wordpress 2.7 does not show your custom Page templates by default on your page edit/create screen. The Page templates working before may become inaccessible now,in your page edit window.

I just looked around, and wondered ,then I found something like very wiered solution.

If you swith to the default wordpress theme, and then switch back your theme, now if you go to edit/create page, the page templates become accessible. That’s not the expected behavior, but any how,Thank God!,It’s working seamlessly after that.

If you have also found the same issue, and found some better solution, please consider mentioning using the below comment form.
