Autoactivate Users and Blogs at Buddypress Signup

Update: 19/01/2009

This plugin is not working currently as pointed in comments by pierre and ray.

If you are using this plugin, as ray points in the forum here , You must use some way to prevent spam, It can increase the spam signups as it does not require users to validate the signup.

So be aware of it, I will advise using SI-Captcha plugin or any other plugin which is meant for stopping spams.

The signup process for buddypress can be a difficult thing for users who don’t want to wait for the activation mail or don’t want to click activation mails.
Well, here is a simple solution which works with buddypress 1.1 and I have tested it with the point release buddypress 1.1.1.

The plugin BP Auto activate User and Blog activates user account as soon as they finish the signup details by entering the details.
Well,if you are a proud owner of buddypress based social network and want to save your users from going through the activation hassle, this plugin is for you .

Please Note,I have tested it with wpmu 2.8.4a and buddypress 1.1.1 (so I assume It will not work with buddypress 1.0.3 as the registration process has quiet changed from 1.0.3 to 1.1).

If you want a version of this plugin for bp 1.0.3 ,please let me know,If there is an enough demand,I will put another plugin which will work with buddypress 1.0.3.

Well, here is the link for downloading the plugin.
BP Auto activate User and Blog at Signup (235)

and here is the screen shot of what happens when your user clicks on “Complete Signup”
bp-signup-finished

Please note again.
It works with the new buddypress theme with improved registration. So It will not work with buddypress 1.0.3.

Now happy social networking and do let me know, how it goes with you.Want more stuff, keep yourself tuned. There are many more plugins yet to come.I will like to see your suggestions for buddypress based plugins[obviously you will get credits for your ides :) ].

    Hello!
I’m in the final stages of site development before launching my wpmu+bp+bbpress social network. Going to install your plugin allowing auto registration and after checking the readme.txt, I came here to ask about the function to send new members an email with their account info. I’ll have to check my plugins later today (way too many to remember just yet), but I think one exists to send a welcome email, right?
If you have a method already developed that would tie into your plugin, I believe that would be the most reliable way to go. Do you charge for this part of it?
I’m VERY excited to use this plugin for many reasons, so thank you SO much for using your skills to benefit so many of us. I need to get a little cash ahead after I’m up and running, but I definitely plan on paypal’ing at least a few bucks to many of you coders that provide all these incredible features!
man, what a book here! ok,
    The End

      hi Stan
Thanks for the comment.I was ot well,so could not reply to you earlier.

Well,This is built in functionality of wpmu/buddypress.You can simply enable that.
Just comment line 24 in the code
      add_filter(“wpmu_welcome_notification”,”cc_stop_welcome_notification”,10,5)
Comment this line and your users will get automatic welcome notification.

      Thanks
      Brajesh

I like this idea. I am concerned about spam account signups. What do you think?

    • brajesh says:

I agree with you.Wordpress Mu is known for spammers creating splogs. The best way to avoid that will be putting captcha and other security measures.Stilll ,Spam will remain an issue with wpmu until something better arrives.

      Hi Kevin,
2 things; 1st is that this plugin isn’t necessary anymore if you upgrade to the latest release of Buddypress. There is an email sent to activate but I’m pretty sure I was able to login before activating (I’ve only done it once a few days ago). Personally, I want some kind of email sent with account details anyhow, and after activating later, there is another welcome email that follows.
2nd for the spam, I did what Brajesh suggested above and have installed SI Captcha. I looked at several of them and this was the easiest to get onto the registration page and is one of the easiest I’ve seen to read for users.
      Hope some of this helps.

It seems with the latest wpmu (2.8.5.2) and buddypress (1.1.2) the user will still receive an email with an activation link they can click on. Clicking this link of course gives an error seeing as the account is already activated.

I can’t seem to figure out how to prevent the link from being sent.

  4. brajesh says:

    @PierreMinik
Thanks for pointing.I had tested it with wpmu 2.8.4 and buddypress 1.1 .I am going to put an update by this weekend. Hopefully that will help.

I had been not checking this blog for some time.
Thanks for pointing. I will be updating this plugin for wpmu 2.9.x once bp 1.2 is available and will let you know in the forum there :)
